6. function description the lcd display mod u le is bu ilt in a lsi contro ller , the contro ller has tw o 8-bit registers, an instruction register (ir) and a data register (dr). the ir stores instruction codes, such as display clear and cursor shift, and address infor m ation for display data ram (ddram) and char acter gene rator (cgram). the ir can only be written from the mpu. the dr tem porarily sto r es data to be written or r ead f r om ddram or cgram. w h en address inf o rm ation is written in to th e ir, then d a ta is stor ed into the dr f r om ddram or cgram. by the register selector (rs) signal, these two registers can be selected. r s r / w operation 0 0 ir write as an internal op eration (disp l ay clear , etc.) 0 1 read busy flag (db7) and address counter (db0 to db7) 1 0 w r ite data to ddram or cg ram (dr to ddram or cgram) 1 1 read data from ddram or cg ram (ddram or cgram to dr) busy flag (bf) w h en the busy flag is 1, the cont ro ller lsi is in the interna l opera tion mode, and the next instruction will not be a ccepted. w h en rs=0 and r/ w = 1, the bus y flag is outpu t to db7. the next ins t ruction must be written after ensuring that the busy flag is 0. addr ess co unter (ac) the address counter (ac) assigns ad dresses to both ddram and cgram. display data ram (ddram) this ddram is used to store the display data represented in 8-bit ch aracter codes. its extend ed capacity is 8 0 8 bits o r 8 0 characters. below figure is the relationships between ddram addresses and positions on the liquid crystal display . ac (hexadecim al) low bits high bits exa m ple: ddram addresses 4e ac6 ac5 ac4 ac3 ac2 ac1 ac0 1 0 0 1 1 1 0 page 8 , t o t a l 28 pa ges free datasheet http:///
